Canon EOS R7 - professional features in an APS-C sensor camera

Canon is now also moving to the new R system for APS-C system cameras. The first in the body-cell series is the R7, which features most of the new goodies familiar from the R6 and R5, only with a smaller cell size. This naturally brings the price down, making the R7 a very attractive camera for its features. In practice, the R7 continues the tradition of the mirrorless 7D series, thus becoming Canon's ”APS-C flagship”.

The R7 uses a 32.5 megapixel APS-C size sensor. Although the smaller sensor is often seen as a budget solution, the 1.6x magnification of the APS-C sensor can be helpful in some situations. In nature photography, for example, the extra magnification can often help you get close to your subject. Unlike previous mirrorless cameras, the R7 has the option of an in-camera image stabilizer. When shooting hand-held, the image stabilizer is always a useful tool, especially when shooting video. In photography, on the other hand, the image stabilizer allows you to take advantage of longer exposure times. . The R7 incorporates the new generation of autofocus familiar from the EOS R3, R5 and R6 cameras, which performs remarkably well in demanding focusing situations. The focus AI is based on deep learning and can detect people, animals and vehicles. In humans in particular, the focus stays glued, no matter how fast the subject is moving. The R7 is certainly not lacking in speed. As well as the speed of the autofocus, the shooting speed is dizzying. With the mechanical shutter, the camera is capable of 15 frames per second. If that's not enough, the electronic shutter doubles the shooting speed to 30 fps. The electronic shutter also enables a super-fast 1/16,000 second shutter speed. The DIGIC X processor, familiar from the top end of Canon's range, is fast enough to process 42 RAW files or 126 JPEG files in a single burst at 30fps.

The Canon R7's video side is so versatile that it could well be called a hybrid camera. At its best, the camera captures a super-smooth 4k image at 7K resolution, resulting in a very sharp image reproduction. At the standard 4K setting, shooting is possible at up to 60 frames per second, so fast movements are reproduced smoothly. If you want to slow down fast motion even more, the camera can shoot at FullHD resolution up to 120 fps. If the dream is to shoot your own movie, the R7 offers a C-Log 3 colour profile that allows for comprehensive colour definition in post-production.
