Fujifilm X-T3 - New sensor and more power

This time Fuji didn't spare any punches. A camera aimed equally at videographers and stills photographers, or for fast action photography, the Fujifilm X-T3 is a fast and versatile powerhouse. It all revolves around the Fuji X-T3's new sensor and new processor. High-quality stills and 4k video are a breeze, and autofocus is near the level of today's industry leaders. The 26.1 megapixel APS-C format X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor features a backlit design, with improved image quality across all sensitivity ranges. 2.16 million focus points of phase-detection AF is fast and accurate. Imaging and focusing are partnered by X-Processor 4 with 4 cores. These deliver 11 fps with mechanical shutter, and 30 fps with electronic shutter (1.25 crop @30 fps). Internal 4k60p video and external 10 bit 4:2:2 video.

Firmware 4.00

Fuji released a new firmware version on 28.10.2020 that further enhances the value of the X-T3. The focus has been updated Fujifilm X-T4 to match the camera.

• The fastest autofocus speed has been improved from 0.06 seconds to 0.02 seconds, matching the performance of the X-T4.
• The target motion prediction algorithm has been updated.
• AF tracking performance has been doubled *. Press the shutter button halfway while the subject is in focus to maintain focus.
• Face tracking / Eye AF performance has been updated. The algorithm has been rewritten to double * Eye AF tracking performance in continuous shooting.
• The upgrade allows the camera's autofocus to work in low light down to -7EV**, facilitating fast and accurate phase detection even in darkness.
• The new firmware adds a “Focus Limiter” function, which gives a predefined focus range.

Professional video functions

More than a style camera, the Fuji X-T3 offers a bewilderingly wide range of video options. There's internal UHD 4k60p 4:2:0 in 10-bit, plus 4k60p 10-bit 4:2:2 to an external recorder via HDMI port, both options up to 400mb/s and simultaneous internal and external recording is possible. DCI 4K30 and FullHD 1080p120 recording is like dancing. Video files can be recorded in either MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 or HEVC/H.265 compression, and of course 4k.

The overall improvement in video performance is largely due to the quad-core processor. Shutter speeds are a crisp 17ms when shooting 4k60 video, rolling shutter distortion is at a minimum when shooting moving subjects. In addition to the Fuji X-T3's 10-bit colour depth of field, an F-log gamma curve is included to give a very flat image for later colour grading. This maximises the potential dynamic range in difficult lighting situations. When working with F-Log, a revised noise removal algorithm makes the image look relevant. This has resulted in a low ISO 640 lower limit for F-Log. In addition to all this, the camera also features a 3.5mm headphone and a Mic socket.

Compact camera body with proper controls

The processing has also been improved. For example, the four-way buttons on the rear have been raised and a special joystick control has been added to make it easier to adjust the active AF point. The classic shutter speed and sensitivity dials have also been raised and fitted with a lock button that can be switched on/off with just one press. The three-inch screen can be tilted in three directions; up and down when shooting horizontally and up when the camera is turned vertically. Two memory card slots. Both have support for SD cards in the UHS-II capacity class. Wireless image transfer is possible via the camera's built-in Wi-Fi. It can also be used to control the X-T5 from a smartphone/tablet via the FUJIFILM Camera Remote app.

Add to this FUJIFILM's wide range of accessories - well over 20 lenses from ultra-wide angle to super wide angle, four flashes and two different grips, and there are few subjects or situations that are too difficult for the new FUJIFILM X-T5.
