The NiSi Nano Hard-Edge Graduated IRND allows a desired side of the image, such as a clear sky, to be darkened without changing the exposure of the rest of the image. The filter darkening is at its maximum at the edge and decreases towards the centre of the filter with a steep transition. The grey filter does not affect colour rendition and other filters can be used with it. A steep-edged half grey filter is usually used where the boundary between light and dark is clear, such as at the horizon line.

NiSi gray filters are designed for digital cells and emit both visible light and infrared frequencies evenly. The NiSi Optical Nano coating used on all filter surfaces allows for a very clean black head and smooth filtering without colour aberrations.
