A robust and professional zoom with some extra power compared to a basic zoom. Weatherproofed, it's easier to carry around on trips and has been with me on kayaking trips etc. A plus is also the excellently designed backlight protection.
It'll wash a basic plastic toy zoom right out of the water. Even the sales packaging is convincing. The lens hood came in handy when travelling, gets used more often and takes up little space when it slides onto the tube in the stash. I spent a long time chasing the purchase but I don't regret it one bit.
The focal length at this aperture size is staggering and the sharpness is such that it almost makes your eyes hurt when you look at the pictures. Weather protection is the order of the day and the tube is stiff enough that the lens will work as a hand-held if a passerby in a dark alley tries to rob your camera blood.
