The OM System OM-D EE-1 Dot Sight is a very versatile tool, perfect for photographing birds with super telephoto lenses. Powered by a button battery, the red dot sight can be attached to the hot shoe of any camera.
This accessory makes it easier to frame and track distant objects that can easily be lost when using a traditional viewfinder due to its narrow field of view. With the red dot viewfinder, you can easily see a wider view. The brightness and position of the crosshair light can be adjusted and the product is also dust and splash resistant. When photographing flying birds with a long tube, this is a must, as with the viewfinder alone the bird has had time to travel before it reaches the viewfinder. The scope needs to be calibrated or at least checked after every lens change and poke, as the equipment shoe is not for accuracy. The construction is plastic and won't stand up to hard knocks, but is lightweight at the same time. A handy feature is the sealability, so the red dot doesn't accidentally catch fire.
Works great. The construction could be stiffer but it will hold up if you set it up right.
This ”red dot focus” makes it easier to point the camera with long telephoto lenses, for example in nature and sometimes also star photography. As an eyeglass wearer, I have found it helpful for aiming and tracking the subject in fast situations. The device is easy to set up and use. The brightness of the red dot can be adjusted (5 levels + off) and it can be aimed laterally and vertically. However, the controls are quite small, so they may not work with gloves on. The design is not intended for extreme sports, but should hold up under normal use. There is no experience of frost conditions. The target is attached to the camera's accessory mount, but the flash cannot be attached to the same mount at the same time. A functional device for those who need one. One week of use.
