The lens has delivered on all its promises and, on the other hand, the known developments are not a hindrance. The lens hood is a bit of a puzzle to attach, and the position of the zoom ring may take some getting used to. Compatibility with the Sony a7RV so far flawless!
The nature photographer needed light in dense forests where daylight is not readily available. In these areas, long telephones are not useful when distances to the subject are shorter. A test drive was carried out in the forest on a winter morning and the photographer was lucky to find a nimble snowdrop as a model. The print was really good and I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the images.
I almost always zoom in at 200mm with this, so the position of the zoom ring is not a problem. However, if the zoom should be used frequently, the placement is a bit impractical.
Thanks also to Fotomonza for a really good and prompt service!
This is my first zoom lens for a Sony system. I have the A7iii and A7iv as bodies.
Now we have one wedding shoot with Sigma behind us. Here is a brief summary of the experience:
Positive:
- image quality is excellent throughout the entire image area, in my experience very close to, for example, Sony's FE 135mm f1.8 lens.
- you can shoot at full aperture without worry.
- works well with backlighting, very little flare and good contrast retention
- minimal colour distortion
- af was a positive surprise, the focus is fast and the proportion is really well on target
Things to improve:
- backlight protector a bit clumsy; difficult to use and cannot be held in place when turned ”upside down”, as you can't reach the zoom ring.
- a zoom ring at the end of the lens; it feels a bit strange to use, at least at first, but I think you'll get used to it.
All in all, I am very happy with the lens and based on my current experience I would say that the price/quality ratio is very well balanced.
