Sony Alpha A7 III - a versatile all-rounder
The cheapest in the fleet, yet the most popular? The Sony A7 iii does it all, at least well if not brilliantly. Image quality is testament to one of the best noise tolerances on the market, excellent dynamic range and 24 megapixels without low-pass filter. The focusing technology is borrowed from Sony A9 the flagship, and it just works for any shot perfectly. The third generation also brought with it NP-FZ100 a battery that will last a full day of shooting if used sensibly. Ergonomic and design improvements such as a joystick, weather protection and a better grip.
So where is this camera not good and why does it cost so ”little”? The Sony A7 III has fewer megapixels and a worse screen and viewfinder than its big brother, the A7R III. The A9 has the same number of megapixels, but a better focusing system. That's really the difference. This camera is our best-selling model for good reason. You get professional-grade features, and one of the most advanced cameras, at the lowest price in its class.
We are confident that the A7 III will stand the test of time and will be a classic camera of its time. Take a look below at the updated Youtube videos Sony A7 III usability in 2020. Many reviewers still think that the A7 III is the best value for money.
A7 III strengths
- Sony's best noise-resistant modern camera (easily up to ISO 10000), also one of the best on the market for this feature
- Top-level Dynamic Range
- Excellent focusing system, enough for all uses great (only the A9 is better)
- With the NP-FZ100 battery you can shoot all day, no need to worry about the battery life of mirrorless cameras
- Built-in image stabilizer, an absolute must for videographers and makes life for still photographers a whole lot easier
- Full-cell 4K video without body - SLOGILLA!
- Two slots - The market buzzword
- 10 frames per second, also great for sports and nature photographers
Technical presentation jargon
10 frames per second - ratatata
The Sony A7 III allows continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second, with both mechanical and silent shooting with electronic shutter (up to 40 uncompressed RAW images, 89 compressed RAW images or 177 JPEG images). The camera can shoot in real time at 8 frames per second with minimal viewfinder and LCD delay. Full autofocus and automatic exposure tracking are available when shooting in continuous mode.
Even after the buffer is full and you're waiting for the camera to cycle through photos, many critical camera functions are still available - such as the function (Fn) button, menu, image menu, image classification and most other menus.
Updated focus, stabilisation and viewfinder
AF includes 639 AF points covering 93% of the frame and 425 contrast AF points. The autofocus is reliable up to EV-3. Eye AF tracks your eyes and keeps them sharp. The camera's autofocus and tracking is up to twice as fast in low light than the older Sony a7 II. The body has a built-in 5-axis image stabilizer that stops compensating for vibrations coming from 5 different directions. A new joystick on the back of the camera for adjusting focus points. Above the 3” touchscreen is a 2.3 million dot OLED viewfinder. The viewfinder and the display both have ”normal” and ”high” quality settings.
4K 30fps video
The Sony A7 III is capable of 4K 30fps video quality without pixel dropping, including data from the entire sensor area. Video is over-recorded at 2.4x the data rate, resulting in noise-free, jaggies-free, ultra-sharp 4K video. The camera can also shoot 1080p at 120fps up to 100 Mbps. Other features on the video side include Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), S-Log2 / S-Log3, Zebra, Gamma Display Assist and proxy recording.
If you like your camera's battery to last, the A7 III is for you. Sony promises the longest battery life of any mirrorless camera on the market. On a single charge you can shoot a whopping 710 shots. Other features include two SD card slots, USB-C, fluorescent tubes and a flicker-reducing feature when shooting in artificial light, My Menu, which lets you save 30 menu items in a quick search. On top of all this, the camera has a Wi-Fi feature that allows you to get your photos online quickly.

One of the best value for money cameras available today. Great focus, battery, sensor dynamics and can shoot at really high iso values. If anything weak has to be said vs current ones, then I'm looking not for the best quality, nor screen.
A Sony flagship sensor and focusing system for almost a third of the price of a flagship is, in my opinion, an absurdly good deal. On top of that, compared to the flagship, this one has S-LOG profiles for video shooting, which you won't find on Sony's A9. I would say that for people who are looking for a full frame system and also want a cheaper lens range (at the time of writing, there is not much cheaper native bayonet glass available from the major competitors) this is a no brainer.
I've had the camera since its release and it has worked fine for the most part. It was once under warranty, but came back quickly. I've used the camera for portrait photography and for making handheld cameras and it works great in both. The loss of one star comes from the iffy weather protection and also the ergonomics of the camera are not quite the best, as there is quite a bit of space between the camera handle and the lens for fingers with larger lenses.
I have also written a longer review of the camera and it can be found here: https://valovuoto.fi/sony-a7-iii/
The perfect tool for professional use in both light and video photography. It works in every situation, in my case for hockey, weddings, festivals, corporate shootings... The focus does not disappoint and the result is of high quality.

Sony A7 III experiences in the opinion of Foto Monza. We've had this as a rental and use camera since its release. Really nothing to complain about except maybe a little poor weather protection and quality control on certain specimens. However, excellent value for money. If you could give it 4.5* we would.
