Sony A7c - compact full-frame camera
Compact and powerful, the Sony Alpha a7c blends a cinema-sized sensor size with a compact body size. Featuring a 24.2 megapixel Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, the alpha 7c combines hybrid features to handle photo and video situations without letting your ass's carrying capacity slip.
The cinema-size (or ”full”) sensor and Bionz X processor offers up to 15 apertures of dynamic range, with UHD 4K video recording, an extended sensitivity range of ISO 50-204800 and up to 10 fps style shooting speed. The sensor also features a fast Hybrid AF system with 693 phase detection points and 425 contrast detection points. With these, focusing is fast, accurate and intelligent. Eye focus and tracking are top notch. Video and still photography benefits from a 5 aperture stabilizer.
Compared to other cameras in the a7 series, the a7c has a distinctly sleeker line and a design reminiscent of a rangefinder camera, with a side viewfinder and flat top. Speaking of the viewfinder, it's a 0.39″ OLED viewfinder with a 2.36 dot resolution. This is mated to a side-facing 3” vari-angle touch LCD screen.
Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow instant sharing of images or remote use of the camera on mobile devices.
24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor give you high-resolution stills and video while still keeping noise low and action fast. The sensor is backlit without gaps and has an anti-reflection coating on top to improve light gathering and enhance detail.
Copper wiring dramatically improves transfer rates when dealing with 14-bit high-resolution stills. The native sensitivity is ISO 100-51200 which can be extended to ISO 50-204800. It also allows the internal video to grind UHD 4K resolution over a wide dynamic range across the entire width of the sensor. The Bionz X processor combined with the fast LSI processes the footage really fast.
Continuous shooting 10 frames per second is also down to the sensor and processor. You can cram this joy into about 115 raw images. So this is the speed with full-time AF/AE with mechanical or electronic shutter.
Built-in UHD 4K video recording XAVC S format is possible up to 30fps. 2.4x supersampling makes the footage really sharp and full pixel level reduces moiré and jaggies. FullHD 1080 video is also supported and can be captured at 120 frames per second. Both resolutions are compressed in 100 Mb/s XAVC S format in MP4 format with 4:2:0 8-bit sample compression.
Fast 120 fps recording allows 4x and 5x slowdowns when the frame rate of the final product is 30 or 24 frames per second. In addition to high-resolution internal recording, the uncompressed HDMI output with a separate recorder allows pure 4k recording with 4:2:2 8-bit aspect ratio.
Adjustment of colours and gamma is quite extensive when using the S-Log2 curve, familiar from high-end Sony cameras. It squeezes up to 1300% more dynamics into the footage than the traditional rec.709 format. HLG (hybrid log gamma) support allows you to shoot HDR footage in addition to S-log2 and S-log3. It gives 14 apertures of dynamic range.
Rungon design is compact and lightweight, with a metering type of camera and a very streamlined appearance. Compared to the standard a7 series body, the a7c is about 20% smaller and lighter, very close to Sony's APS-C format cameras.
Electronic viewfinder is an XGA OLED type 0.39" viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 million dots and 0.59x magnification. The view is bright and detailed. The background display is a multi-directional 3 inch LCD with a resolution of 921.6K. Shooting from above and below is easy and fun. The screen is also touch-sensitive.
Magnesium alloy body together with the weatherproof construction, is a durable and sturdy solution for many conditions.
The high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery provides around 740 frames (CIPA standard, the actual number is likely to be much higher).
One slot that supports UHS-II cards and fast transfer speeds.
The USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port is fast and reliable for tethering, for example, and can also be used to charge the camera.
