Sony's familiar resolution monster has been loaded with a host of new features and important improvements. The 61 megapixel sensor, which is close to the medium format familiar from the Sony A7R IV, has been paired with Sony's new BIONZ XR processor and with it an AI-based focusing system. The autofocus now detects not only people and animals, but also vehicles, aircraft and insects, and its performance has been significantly improved. The problem with the older Sony AI-based focus systems was that they lacked the performance to be used to their full potential, now the Sony A7R V has a dedicated processor just for this function.

The high resolution also easily highlights the challenges of shooting, which is why Sony has finally brought its image stabilisation up to and beyond that of its competitors. The redesigned stabilizer offers up to 8-step stabilization as well as active stabilization for video.
