Sony FE 70-200 f/4 G OSS II

Sony has updated its classic workhorse lens with the FE 70-200 mm f/4 Macro G OSS II. It has introduced performance enhancements that improve autofocus, stability, magnification and sharpness, while reducing its length and size. This latest iteration, still a portable, everyday tool for events, sports and portraits, extends its capabilities to video and macro applications.

The main change to the optical design of the lens is the introduction of a floating focus element, which allows the lens to achieve a high-resolution 0.5x "half macro" magnification and reduces the minimum focusing distance to 25 centimetres at 70 mm. It can be used throughout the zoom range, as well as the lens' improved sharpness from corner to corner. Advanced Aspherical, Super Extra-low dispersion and ultra-low dispersion aspherical elements reduce and attenuate chromaticity, Nano AR Coating II controls reflections and ghosting, while a rounded, nine-blade diaphragm gives the lens a smooth and even bokeh effect.

The main improvement of the 70-200 mm f/4 II is its faster, video-optimised autofocus system. With four XD Linear motors, two for each of the lens' focus groups, the lens now operates 20 % faster than its predecessor and supports focus tracking during zooming. The new autofocus system also works with the Alpha 1's blackout-free 30 fps continuous shooting speed, double that of the f/4 OSS I.

For those who want to apply the capabilities of the lens to video, Sony has showcased a number of features from its film department. The new autofocus system features near-silent operation, but dramatically reduces focus breathing and focus shift. Linear Response MF ensures consistent and natural operation, while the full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) feature makes it easier to make quick adjustments with the focus ring in AF modes.

Image quality improvements are complemented by the lens' built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilizer, designed to work in conjunction with the camera body's stabilization system to ensure sharp, hand-held images even at the longest focal lengths.

In redesigning the 70-200 mm f/4 II, Sony has kept in mind the durability of both the lens and its user, reducing the length and weight of the optic to 15 % 15 inches and 794 grams. An internal zoom mechanism minimises front end stress, reducing strain during focusing, while its dust and moisture resistant design and rubber guide rings make it suitable for harsh conditions.

Other design features include:

• The detachable and rotating tripod collar increases stability and reduces stress on the camera's lens mount.
• Three focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch on the lens housing allow intuitive touch control and quick setting selection.
• A three-mode optical image stabilisation switch ensures sharpness in varying shooting conditions.
• Full-time DMF switch for manual focus override during AF-C mode.
• Zoom lock and focus range limit switches prevent unwanted lens expansion or limit the focus range used between a limited range or full range to improve focusing speed.
• The fluorine coating on the front lens element repels water, oil and other contaminants and makes cleaning the lens easier.
