The optical design includes two extra-low dispersion elements that reduce chromatic aberrations, two XA elements and three aspherical elements that significantly reduce spherical aberrations. The image is truly tear-free and bright. In addition, the Nano AR coating eliminates haze and lens flare to ensure excellent contrast and colour fidelity when working in harsh lighting conditions.

Optical power is matched by an 11-blade iris that produces smooth, soft-edged bokeh for selective cropping. Focus can be adjusted manually or automatically and mode switching is quick with the switch. The linear response manual focus is snappy, lag-free for smooth operation. The Focus ring roller has a 120° turning radius and is very accurate. There's also a click-off switch on the back of the switch. Enhanced Hybrid autofocus supports phase and contrast focusing. The lens also supports auto-exposure, which is supported by cameras such as Sony's PXW-FX9.
