With a fixed f/2.8 aperture, the lens is compact in size without compromising image quality. The large f/2.8 aperture allows shooting in low light conditions. The extremely accurate and fast VDX focusing motor, dust and splash protection, and focal length make it ideal for sports and nature photography. A VC image stabilizer has been added as a new feature to the lens for even more accurate images.

The lens weighs only around 850g, compared to around 1500g for Sony's 70-200mm GM lens, so it's a very comfortable telezoom lens that makes it easy to follow a moving subject, and you don't need extra grips or holders to balance the lens.

The Tamron 70-180mm G2 F/2.8 features two VDX focusing motors that work seamlessly with Sony's acclaimed focusing system. The closest focusing distance of the lens (at 70mm focal length) is only 30cm! It's not quite a replacement for a macro lens, but it does bring a new perspective to close-up photography.
