The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G is the perfect medium-length portrait lens with a good f/1.8 aperture. The lens is incredibly good value for money, and is a good match for its 3 times more expensive Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.4 G big brother. This cheaper lens is even more accurate than the more expensive version, but loses out on coating quality and thus produces slightly more chromatic aberration. So if you shoot all your images in backlight, you may want to consider buying the f/1.4 version. Otherwise, we almost recommend this lens as it is affordable, compact, fast to focus and optically top quality.

85mm is the perfect focal length for portraits, the closest focusing distance is so long that you can't get the glass to distort the face in any way. It is also not too long, so the face might be ”rounded”. In addition, 85mm combined with a good exposure produces a really pleasant out-of-focus area, or bokeh. This allows you to bring out the subject in beautiful detail.
