Sigma introduces a new zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with an f/1.8 aperture across the entire zoom range, the 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens. It has the optical performance of a fixed focal length lens and is designed for video photography. The wide-normal focal length means a lighter camera bag without compromising on image quality.

Design and performance

The lens has a total of 17 elements in 11 groups, including four aspherical and four special low-dispersion elements. These minimise flare and ghosting and reduce various aberrations. As a result, optical performance matches or exceeds that of other Sigma Art lenses, including 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art -lens. Together with its 11-bladed, rounded dimmer plate, the design promotes sharpness and a large, smooth bokeh when used wide open.

In addition to the maximum aperture of F/1.8, the lens maintains a minimum focusing distance of 28 cm throughout the zoom range. It achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at its longest focal length, increasing depth of field and versatility in confined spaces.

Video production

The lens is designed for video creation. Its bright f/1.8 aperture and wide-normal zoom range make it a versatile tool, ideal for individual photographers shooting on the move. The built-in zoom design maintains overall length during use, making it easy to balance on gimbals. The design also restrains focus shake for smooth movement throughout the focal length range.

Sigma's fast, high-response linear actuator autofocus remains both quiet and accurate, while manual focus is enhanced by click and lock mechanisms.
