Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS - the birdwatcher's top gun

The Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS combines a super long focal length, bright aperture, and lightweight construction. Designed from the ground up for Sony's E-bayonet cameras, it's the ideal tool for sports news and nature photographers. The F/4 aperture and eleven-blade diaphragm allow for tremendous depth-of-field control for subject separation. Shooting in low light is made as easy as possible with this instrument. Three fluorite elements and one XA (extreme aspherical) element reduce chromatic aberrations and colour leakage, while two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements and Nano AR lens coatings further enhance performance and image quality by reducing reflections and various distortions in difficult shooting conditions. The front element is coated with fluorine which repels fingerprints and makes it easier to keep clean.

This beauty weighs only 3,04 kilos, which makes this a wonderfully lightweight cannon for its size. The centre of gravity of the lens has been brought very close to the camera so it's not as front-heavy as glasses of this type tend to be. This makes shooting with a monopod or from the arm relatively comfortable. Inside the unit beats Sony's XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear autofocus motor, which drives two motors for fast and quiet autofocusing. The focus is able to follow the subject across the screen accurately and satisfactorily even at high speeds. In addition, the optical image stabilizer can work in tandem with the camera's own image stabilizer to achieve effective five-axis stabilization.

Videographers will love the Power Focus function that makes focusing smooth when shooting video.

The magnesium alloy body is moisture and dust repellent if you end up shooting in challenging conditions. A fixed tripod collar with bearings allows for smooth rotation, with a switch to disengage the stairs. When switched on, the user can quickly access 90 degree angles as required.

Teleconverters / Telecom relays

It is worth mentioning that this, as well as the new 200-600mm Sony teleconverters that work with glass. While the image quality still remains at least pleasing, of course 2x telephoto is always worse than 1.4x, but sometimes you just need to sacrifice a little bit of image quality for the sake of the mille. The best telephoto lens works with the Sony A9 and A9 II.
