Quick guide: storyteller on the move, vlogger

This descriptor is a brand of itself. He films his everyday life, his travels or his educational videos directly for his followers. The equipment must be so simple that the video can be started at the flick of a switch, but the quality must stand out from a mobile phone image. What matters most is image stabilisation, reliable face tracking on video and sound quality. This cameraman often works alone, so a reversible screen that allows him to see himself is an absolute must. Shooting tips See also [...]

Camera

Sony ZV-E1 or ZV-E10 II. Sony has created the ZV series specifically for content creators. The ZV-E1 is a top-of-the-range, full-cell model that brings cinematic quality and AI-based cropping to vlogging. The ZV-E10 II, meanwhile, is a great APS-C option with everything you need: a ”Product Showcase” mode for product demonstrations, a Bokeh switch for blurring the background and an excellent internal microphone.

Lens

Sony E PZ 10-20mm f/4 G or Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G (for ZV-E1). For vlogging, a wide angle of view is important. The PZ 10-20mm is an incredibly small motorised zoom lens that fits perfectly on the ZV-E10 II. The motorised zoom (Power Zoom) allows smooth zooming in video directly from the camera lever. For the full-frame ZV-E1, the 20-70mm is a versatile choice that is wide enough for selfies but also extends to pots.

Additional information

Sony ECM-W2BT -microphone and GP-VPT2BT -description handle. In video, sound is as important as picture. The Sony ECM-W2BT is a wireless microphone system that connects intelligently directly to the camera. It offers multiple directional patterns for different situations. GP-VPT2BT is a wireless shooting handle/table stand that lets you control zoom and recording with your thumb - perfect for run-and-gun style.

Filming tips

  1. The sound is from 50 % video. Viewers will forgive the slightly soft image, but no one will listen to the bad sound. Always wear a windscreen (”deadcat”) over the microphone when filming outdoors so that the hum of the wind doesn't spoil your speech.
  2. Look at the lens, not the screen. When you talk to the camera, look directly into the lens. Then you make eye contact with the viewer. If you stare at the swivel screen to the side, you look like you're talking to someone past the viewer.
  3. Light is your friend. You don't need studios to vlog. Position yourself so that the main light source (such as a window or the sun) is in front of your face, not behind you. Shooting ”backlit” makes your face look dark silhouetted, while dappled light illuminates your face in a flattering way.
