Sirui W-2204 Carbon fibre stand
Sirui W-2204 is a carbon fibre stand designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Its waterproof feet protect the tripod from water damage, while ergonomic foot angle adjustment locks allow for quick angle adjustment - even with wet hands or gloves on. An interesting feature is the option to detach one of the legs, giving you a waterproof monopod. You can also attach the centre tube of the tripod to the monopod to increase the height. The legs swivel 180°, making the tripod compact for transport. The stand has a spirit level to help you set it at the right level, and each leg has an automatic locking mechanism. The two-piece centre tube allows you to change long and short tubes as needed. Three different angles on the legs make it easy to use the tripod on uneven terrain. Excellent grip rubber foot ends can be replaced with stainless steel ice picks included in the package. In addition, you can attach an extra weight to the tripod hook under the centre tube for extra stability.

I needed a tripod that would cover as much of the range of uses as I could imagine, but at the same time be light enough to carry with me when I needed it. I think this tripod does that really well. It's the wrong choice if lightness is your main criterion. On the other hand, if you want the lightest possible without compromising on features and sturdiness, this is a good choice. Compared to my previous tripod, it is a kilo lighter and when assembled it fits into a smaller space, and carrying the tripod around no longer feels like such a chore, which as such makes the upgrade worthwhile. Both my old tripod and this tripod, both get the same height above the head. If you don't use a centre tube the stability is excellent with the camera at a convenient eye level, if your own height is around 180cm. Using a centre tube is always a compromise regardless of the tripod. In addition to the significant weight reduction in the upgrade, I also got a lot of new features such as use as a monopod when needed, faster setup and teardown, weather protection and so on. This model is also particularly interesting because it has waterproof locks. I am not aware of any other manufacturer making similar ones in this price range. Other options cost at least three times more. The footing is of very high quality. Its usability is in a whole different class compared to the previous one. It is much quicker to set up and put back together. The price/performance ratio is also very good. When buying the tripod, I was wondering which ball head would be more suitable, the K-30x or the K-20x model. I suspected that when assembled the K-30x would not fit between the legs of the stand without pushing them out a little, so when assembled it would not fit in as small a space. However, the ball head is only really a little bit too big, and there is no significant drawback. In fact, the stand is clearly designed to be used with both. The stand came with two ball head mounting plates. One is the same size as the K-20x model and the other is the same size as the K-30x model, although the difference in mounting plate size is really just cosmetic. The ball head is very sturdy. I chose it because I will be shooting timelapse videos, where sturdiness is very important. Otherwise a notch smaller model would probably be quite adequate for all other basic use.
